AWARD WINNING AUTHOR

I'm an award winning romantic suspense author, and I've had a life-long love affair with books. That's not as kinky as it sounds--get your mind out of the gutter! It was only natural I had to write them, too. I live in Nashville, Tennessee, and I love every moment I spend writing.

I'm a member of ROMANCE WRITERS OF AMERICA and MUSIC CITY ROMANCE WRITERS, Published Authors Special Interest Chapter, and Hearts Through History. When I served as the editor of MCRW's newsletter, Love Notes, we won the RWA small chapter newsletter contest for the year 2005.

I'm a native of Henderson, Kentucky, but I've lived in Tennessee so long I consider myself a true native...almost. I have an adult son, who's a hero in my eyes. I've given up my day job, and it's amazing how much more writing I'm able to accomplish.  Click here to see a few photos!

Summertime in Nashville gets pretty steamy. No wonder Tess and Scott combust.

Nashville Homicide Detective Tess O’Malley has a lot to prove. She comes from a long line of police officers, including her father and older brothers. First she and her partner are taken off a high profile case and sidelined with a cold case instead. After reviewing the files, she’s certain her cold case is connected to the current one, and she sets out to prove it. Too bad it means locking horns with a handsome P.I. who could win her heart and derail her career.
Scott Holt is all business when it comes to running his family’s P.I. firm. When the lovely Detective O’Malley comes to question him about his possible involvement in her cold case, he has everything but business on his mind. Like locking lips with the fiery redhead.

Welcome Marie-Nicole Ryan, thank you for joining me at Naughty Novelists. I hear you have a new book coming out soon?
Thanks, Cherie. It’s wonderful of you to have me. Yes, my newest release, “Love Me If You Can” has a release date of August 6th.

Tell me about the heart of your story, "Love Me if You Can."
Love Me If You Can is set in Nashville and is the result of watching a TV show and wondering “what if?” It’s about a blended family who run a P.I. agency. Love Me If You Can is Scott and Tess’ story. Scott Holt is the eldest of the Holt-Lackey family. When his father and stepmother were killed in an auto accident, he had to drop out of law school and take over running his father’s cash poor P.I. agency and support his five younger siblings. The story starts ten years after the family lost their parents.

Tess O’Malley is a driven homicide detective—is there any other kind—with a lot to prove. Her father and three older brothers are on the job and she’s determined to make captain by forty—just like her father. She and Scott are pulled together when she’s sidelined with a cold case and calls on him for an interview. The governor’s grandson has disappeared from Camp Einstein just like the teen from her cold case. His body has just been found when the story starts. Scott’ is connected to the cold case since he was a counselor the year the first teenager was kidnapped and murdered.

Is he a suspect? How fast can she clear him and can she find the serial killer before another boy meets the same fate?

What is your darkest moment in the novel without giving too much away?

You could say the dark moment of the romance plot occurs when Tess decides her career is more important than her relationship and uses herself as bait. Another dark moment is when the serial killer stalks and takes another teenage boy. The race is on to find him before he ends up like those before him.

Why do you write and when did you start?

I’ve always wanted to be a writer. I think I wrote my first story when I was twelve, but my best friend said her story was better. Maybe it was. For the life of me I can’t remember.  Throughout school, life tended to get in the way. I was good in science—never math—so I ended up becoming a nurse. Still the creative side beckoned in many forms: macramé, watercolor, interior design and finally with the purchase of my first computer, I settled in to write the book I always knew I would write.

What is your process when you write a novel?

Ideas come from all sorts of places, but the process once I have an idea for a story is to put it into a Word document and save it for the future. When I’m ready to start writing, my process is pretty much the same. I do first person journals for my main characters and “let them talk to me.” They tell me all sorts of cool things about themselves and their back story. I start a folder for that story and save the journals there. I’m an all computer gal, no handwriting for me…ever. The only exception is if inspiration strikes and I can’t get to a computer. I’ve been known (one time) to write on a napkin and then beg a piece of paper from a waitress.

But I digress. Once I have an idea who the characters are, I have an idea what they want (goal), why they want it (motivation) and why the heck they can’t have it (conflict).  I start writing the story. Sometimes I pull out an Excel spreadsheet and fill in the major turning points along the lines of Vogler’s The Writer’s Journey. I have an arc for each character, the suspense and the romance. I don’t go into a lot of detail, just notes to guide me along.

What do you want your readers to pull away from your story?

A rip-roaring good time rooted in a HEA romance and a suspenseful story.

GREAT answer! Is there someone in your immediate family or a friend that reads your material as you write? A sounding board?

I share my work with one dear friend who is a reader and doesn’t offer any kind of critique. She loves my stories and prods me to write faster. I send things to my sister because she’s terrific  at catching my typos. As for a sounding board, I have a writer friend with whom I sometimes brainstorm. She’s an excellent editor in her own right and she will give me a “big picture” type of critique. All of them are great value to me.

What is a really romantic evening for you?

You must have me confused with someone else. LOL!

Marie! You're supposed to have the sex-life of a nymph! But as an author, I feel your pain...who has the time?  But seriously, If there were one word to describe you, what would it be?

Determined.

That's great! Tell us about your next project.

I have two in the works. One is a contemporary romantic suspense set in upstate New York where I’ve visited many times. This one is almost complete. Then I’ve started the second story in my erotic historical western Loving Lawmen series for Samhain Publishing called Pleasuring the Pinkerton, and sadly it’s languishing while I try to sell my house and finish the RS.

Who knew authors actually had lives? LOL
Thank you for stopping by Naughty Novelists, I hope to see you again and wish you great success! Anything else you want to tell your readers today?

I’d like to say thank you for stopping by and please check out my recent Samhain Publishing  release, Seducing the Sheriff.

Thankful for the oven timer giving him a brief reprieve, Scott took a deep breath. Tess raced around the bar to the kitchen, then bent over and opened the oven. Her flirty, short summer dress hiked up and gave him a view of slender thighs and a little bit of lace that didn’t begin to cover the smooth, rounded cheeks of her ass.

Damn. He was hard as a brick and ready to be laid. He stepped behind the bar to hide his body’s response and took a deep breath. Maybe counting backward?

Shut your eyes, fool.

“What’s in the oven?” Better distraction than self-destruction.

She closed the oven door, straightened and smiled. “Dessert, but it’s not done…yet.”

He laughed. If she only knew. “As it so happens, dessert was on my mind as well.” She slanted him a sultry sideways glance.

“I bet I know what’s on your mind.”

His mouth grew dry. He leaned his elbows on the counter and grinned. “You’d probably win that bet.”

Her cheeks turned a pretty pink. Was he the reason for her blushes? Or was it the heat from the oven? A little shyly, she fluttered her dark red lashes.

“Maybe we’d better talk about something else?” As if he’d made her nervous, she proceeded to straighten the silverware, which was already straight, and refold the napkins.

Maybe? “How’s the Hurley case going?” he asked. “Any more leads you want to share?”

Her expression grew serious. “Lots of leads. Nothing’s panned out.”

“He’s dead by now?” The death of a young person never failed to sadden him and remind him of

his parents’ death and his missing sister. How would the Hurley’s manage to go on? Like everyone else who lost a family member too soon—and it was always too soon—they would manage somehow.

“Unless there’s a miracle.”

“Not many of those around nowadays.” Still distracted, he picked up the wine and proceeded to open it. The cork popped slightly as he removed it.

“No.” Tess held out her glass for him to fill. “You know, I’ve seen more death in my years on the job than most people see in a lifetime, but other than my grandparents, I’ve never lost any of my immediate family. Not like you have.” She took a tiny sip from her glass, then licked the wine from her lips.

The sight of her tongue sent a bolt of lust to his groin. Keeping track of the conversation wasn’t easy with a woman like Tess in the room. But he tried.

“When it’s sudden and totally unexpected, it’s a sucker punch to the gut and the heart. So much to take in at once. Too much. Incomprehensible pain. With my folks, I wondered if they saw the car coming. If they suffered for even a few seconds? What were their last thoughts?”

She came over and put her arms around him. “I’m so sorry.”

He cupped her ass and pulled her closer, inclined his head and kissed her, an easy gentle kiss which rapidly grew longer and deeper. His cock hardened until he was ready to explode. She opened her mouth to his and yanked his shirt from his slacks. He loosened his hold on her long enough to whip the shirt over his head. Her slender long fingers splayed over his chest, then tweaked his nipples.

She slipped her dress straps over her shoulders and bared her breasts. He weighed them in his palms. Lush. Firm. Coral-tipped. Passion welled up in his chest and nearly choked him. “My God, you’re beautiful.”

“Make love to me. I don’t want to wait.”

He picked her up and carried her into the bedroom and laid her gently on the bed. Somehow, he managed to shuck his slacks and briefs, shoes and socks. He raised the skirt of her flirty dress and eased down her lacy panties. The crisp red curls at the apex of her thighs were already damp. Her thighs jittered at his touch and opened to him. He inhaled her feminine musk, tempted to bring her to climax with his mouth alone.

But no, she wanted more. She reached for his rigid shaft and cupped his testicles. “Wait.” She reached into the bedside table and withdrew a condom. She opened the pack and slid it up his cock, then lightly caressed his balls. He jerked in response to her touch. “Now.”

“No, not yet.” He pulled the dress over her head, leaving her lush body to his unobstructed view. He

centered his body over hers but resisted driving into her warmth. Starting at her neck, he left a trail of

kisses, then sucked each tightly budded nipple. Underneath him, she writhed and twisted, clenching the bed linens in her fists and moaning her lust.

Mate of mine. She was his and had to be for all time. He could never give up this woman, no matter

what. So generous with her touches, she had to feel the same. He reached the core of her womanhood and flicked her clit, burying his nose in her musk. She tasted like a heaven he’d never known. She arched

against him and moaned. He slid a finger inside; her slick inner walls clutched at him, but he pulled out. “I have something better.”

“Mm, please.”

Feeling like a rampant stallion and close to exploding, he thrust deep. She took him fully, her inner walls adjusting to his size. Moved against him with slapping thrusts. She met and matched his frantic pace. His mate in every way. Never could he desire another.

Her body gripped his and grew hot under him. The flame of desire centered in his groin, his breathing grew ragged. He tried to slow the pace, but she wouldn’t stop clenching his cock, over and over with her rhythmic thrusts.

He rolled and flipped her over until she straddled his body. Her breasts bobbed in front of him. He levered onto his elbows and captured the budded nipple of one in his mouth. He nipped and raked the tender bud with his teeth.

She rode him. Hard.

Fast and furious, until his groin filled with explosive sensations of near pain. His body spasmed and pumped deep into hers. Above him, she cried his name and rode him until neither had the strength for more, then collapsed on his sweaty chest.

She felt so right in his arms, her soft breasts molded against his chest, her legs twined with his, her firm ass cupped in his palms, and the way their bodies fit together as one. He never wanted to leave her side.

“Tess O’Malley, I can see us spending our lives together like this. Just think our kids will have your red hair and my brown eyes. They’ll be as beautiful as you are right now.”

She stiffened in his arms and then pulled away. “Spending our lives together? Kids? Have you lost it?”

Desperate not to lose her, he straightened and sat up in bed. “What the fuck? I don’t mean right this minute. Later…in a couple of years or so.”

She swung her legs over the side of her bed. “I don’t know what gave you the idea I was marriage material.” Hands trembling, she started jerking on her clothes.

“But—”
